Cockroach control for Amarillo kitchens and bathrooms

Small brown roaches under the sink and big reddish ones coming up the floor drain are two different problems with two different fixes. We identify which cockroach you have, then use gel baits, growth regulators and drain care to clear them out of kitchens and bathrooms.

Quick answer

What is the best way to get rid of cockroaches in an Amarillo house?

The best way to get rid of cockroaches in an Amarillo house depends on the species. German cockroaches need gel baits placed in the cracks where they hide, plus an insect growth regulator so young cannot breed. American cockroaches come from outside and sewers, so the fix is wet drain traps, sealing and perimeter treatment. Follow-up visits confirm they are gone.

What to look for

Signs of a cockroach problem in your house

Roaches hide most of the time, so watch for these.

Roaches on the counter at night

Small roaches running off the counter or into the sink drain area after dark are usually German cockroaches.

Pepper-like droppings

Small dark specks in cabinet corners, drawer tracks and on top of the refrigerator are German cockroach droppings.

Egg cases in cabinets

Small brown capsules about a quarter inch long, stuck in cabinet hinges or under shelves, each hold dozens of young.

A big roach near a drain

A single large reddish roach in the bathtub or near a floor drain is usually an American cockroach coming up from the sewer.

A musty, oily smell

Heavy German cockroach populations leave a stale, oily odor in cabinets and behind appliances.

Roaches in daytime

Seeing roaches out in daylight often means the hiding spots are crowded and the population is large.

On the visit

What our technician does on a cockroach visit

Here is how a typical German cockroach job runs, with drain work added for American roaches.

  1. Inspect and identify

The technician checks under sinks, behind the refrigerator and stove, inside cabinet hinges, the dishwasher area and bathrooms with a flashlight. Identifying the species and finding the main hiding spots decides the plan.

  2. Place gel baits in cracks

Small dots of gel bait go into cracks, hinges and gaps where roaches hide, not on open counters. Roaches eat the bait and share it in their hiding spots. Advion is one example of the gel baits a technician might use.

  3. Add an insect growth regulator

A growth regulator such as Gentrol goes into the same areas. It keeps young roaches from maturing and breeding, which breaks the cycle that makes German roaches so hard to stop.

  4. Treat drains and entry points

For American cockroaches, the technician checks floor drains, tub drains and the water heater closet, treats around them and seals gaps around pipes. The outside perimeter and weep holes get treated too.

  5. Follow up and adjust

Follow-up visits check bait consumption and roach activity. Bait types are rotated if roaches start avoiding them, and treatment continues until no live roaches turn up.

Why roaches hit Amarillo homes in hot, dry spells

A 2023 Texas A&M AgriLife report listed cockroaches among the pests, with scorpions, rodents and pill bugs, that head indoors for moisture when it gets hot and dry. Amarillo's rain comes mostly in thunderstorms from April through September, with long dry periods in between, and those dry stretches are when American cockroaches leave sewers and yards for the moisture in your bathroom and kitchen.

The big American cockroach spends most of its life outside or down in the sewer lines, and it climbs into houses through floor drains. The water in a drain trap is what keeps them out. In Amarillo's dry air, traps in guest bathrooms, basement floor drains or garage drains that rarely get used can evaporate and leave an open path. Pouring water down unused drains regularly is one of the easiest roach fixes there is.

German cockroaches are a different story. They have no outdoor population in Texas, so they come in on cardboard boxes, grocery bags, used appliances and secondhand furniture. Weather has little to do with them; one infested box from a warehouse is enough. That is why German roaches turn up in clean homes too.

What you can do

What you can do to help cockroach treatment work

These habits make the bait more attractive and cut roach food and water.

  • Skip store-bought sprays and foggers after treatment; they can drive roaches away from the bait.
  • Wipe up crumbs and grease, especially around the stove and under the toaster.
  • Run water down rarely used drains every week so the trap stays filled.
  • Repair the drip under the kitchen sink and any slow leak at the toilet base.
  • Unpack grocery and shipping boxes right away and take cardboard outside.
  • Store pet food in sealed containers and pick up bowls overnight.
  • Check used appliances and furniture carefully before bringing them inside.

What changes the cost of cockroach control in Amarillo

Roach jobs vary with the species and how established they are.

German or American roaches
German cockroaches need more detailed baiting and follow-up; American roaches often need drain and perimeter work.
Size of the infestation
A few roaches under one sink takes less work than roaches throughout the kitchen and bathrooms.
Size of the home
More kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms mean more areas to bait and treat.
Number of follow-ups
German cockroach jobs usually need at least one follow-up visit, often more.
Clutter and sanitation
Heavy clutter gives roaches more hiding places and can add visits.

Why foggers and sprays often make German roaches worse

German cockroaches spend about three quarters of their time in cracks, so a spray or fogger mostly hits open surfaces they rarely cross. Worse, many over-the-counter products repel roaches, pushing them deeper into walls and into other rooms. Homeowners often fog the kitchen and then find roaches in the bathroom a week later.

Baits work the other way. Roaches come to them, eat them and carry the active ingredient back to the colony, where other roaches pick it up. Combined with a growth regulator that stops young from maturing, baiting works with roach behavior instead of against it. That is why our technician asks you to hold off on sprays once the baits are in place.

Questions

Cockroach Control questions from Amarillo homeowners

How long does it take to get rid of German cockroaches in an Amarillo home?

Most homes see a big drop within a couple of weeks of baiting, but full control usually takes several weeks and at least one follow-up. Egg cases protect young roaches from bait, so new ones keep hatching for a while. The growth regulator stops those young from breeding, and follow-up visits keep fresh bait in place until no live roaches remain.

Why do big cockroaches come up my bathroom drain in Amarillo?

Those are almost always American cockroaches climbing up from the sewer, and they get through most easily when the water in the trap has dried up. In Amarillo's dry climate, traps in rarely used showers, tubs and floor drains can evaporate. Run water down every drain weekly, use drain covers at night and call us if they keep coming.

Are cockroach gel baits safe around kids and pets?

Gel baits are placed in small dots inside cracks, hinges and gaps rather than on open surfaces, which keeps them out of reach of kids and pets. The amount used is small. The technician places bait with your household in mind and explains where it went. Let us know about crawling babies or curious pets so we can plan around them.

Can German cockroaches come from my neighbor's yard in Amarillo?

Not usually. German cockroaches do not live outdoors in Texas; they live strictly indoors near heat and water. They arrive on boxes, grocery bags, used appliances and furniture, or travel between units in apartments and duplexes. If you live in a detached house, the source is almost always something carried inside.
