Quick answer

What pest problems are most common in Randall County?

Randall County homes see striped bark scorpions in summer, subterranean termite swarms in April and May, and skunks denning under porches and sheds, with snakes along the canyon edges. We treat attics and weep holes for scorpions, inspect slabs for mud tubes, and seal openings under decks and foundations so wildlife can't move back in.

Panhandle note

Why south Amarillo and Canyon see so many scorpions

Randall County has about 140,753 people, more than Potter County, and most of them live in south Amarillo or in Canyon, the county seat. The south Amarillo side takes in City View, Puckett, Sleepy Hollow, The Greenways, Heritage Hills and The Colonies, along with the Hollywood Rd area where our office sits. Past the city, Lake Tanglewood and Timbercreek Canyon sit out in the draws, and Palo Duro Canyon State Park lies east of Canyon. We serve every Randall County ZIP: 79015, 79109, 79110, 79118, 79119 and 79121.

The striped bark scorpion climbs walls and trees and spends hot weather in attics, moving down into living areas when the attic heats up. Newer brick homes give it weep holes and the gap under the garage door; older homes give it cracked mortar and loose trim. Where subdivisions back onto pasture, grading strips away the ground cover scorpions and crickets were living in, and they move toward the nearest lit house.

Canyon country brings its own visitors. Prairie rattlesnakes live in arid grassland and canyons, and western diamondbacks and bullsnakes turn up at the edges of town, mostly in July and August when local bites peak. Homes in Timbercreek Canyon and on lots near the canyon rims are the ones most likely to find a snake in a garage or window well.

What the 2025 rabid skunk reports mean for Randall County yards

Texas DSHS reported two rabid skunks in Randall County in December 2025, part of 118 rabid skunks confirmed statewide that year. Striped skunks often den under houses, decks, porches and sheds. They breed in February and March and the young arrive in May, so a den you ignore in early spring can hold a whole family by summer.

A skunk out in daylight, stumbling, or showing no fear of people needs distance, not a broom. Keep pets inside and their vaccinations current, and call animal control if anyone has been bitten or scratched. For a den under a house, we confirm the animal is there, check for young, remove the skunk and close the opening with wire buried into the soil so the next one can't dig back in. Texas Parks and Wildlife rules limit where captured skunks can be released, and we work within them.

What a scorpion treatment covers in a Randall County home

Scorpions need more than a spray along the baseboards.

  1. Find the daytime shelter

We look for where scorpions hide by day: rock borders, block walls, stacked lumber, the attic and the gaps around the garage door. A blacklight helps, since scorpions glow under ultraviolet light.

  2. Treat the attic

Dust placed along top plates and around pipe and wire openings in the attic reaches scorpions that shelter there in summer before they drop into rooms.

  3. Cover the perimeter and weep holes

A band of material along the foundation, weep holes, door frames and garage threshold catches scorpions coming in from the yard.

  4. Seal the narrow gaps

We seal or point out gaps around plumbing under sinks, at the dryer vent and along garage door seals. Scorpions slip through very thin openings.

  5. Keep it current

Scorpions take repeat attention. A quarterly schedule keeps the barrier fresh through the warm months.

Questions

Pest control questions from Randall County

Is your Randall County office close to Canyon and Lake Tanglewood?

Yes. Our office is at 231 Lamount Dr in south Amarillo, near Hollywood Rd (Loop 335), inside Randall County. From there, Canyon is about 15 miles south on I-27, and Lake Tanglewood and Timbercreek Canyon are a short drive southeast. Same-day visits across the county are often possible, and phones are answered day and night.

Why do scorpions show up in brand-new Randall County subdivisions?

Grading and construction disturb the ground scorpions were living in, and new homes nearby offer shade, irrigation moisture and lit windows that draw the insects they eat. Weep holes and garage doors give easy entry. Treating the perimeter and attic early, and sealing gaps before the first summer in the house, keeps the numbers down.

Should I worry about rabid skunks in Randall County?

Take sightings seriously. Texas DSHS reported two rabid skunks in Randall County in December 2025. A skunk acting strangely, out in daylight or approaching people should be avoided and reported to animal control. Keep pets vaccinated. If a skunk is denning under your home, we can remove it and close the entry so another one doesn't move in.
